beading with wire (jewelry-making, part I)

Updated: Apr 23, 2024

Learn the basics of beading - thrift stores are a great place to get supplies!

(video tutorial, part 1/2)

Materials:

  • Beads; great sources include:

    • thrift store craft aisles

    • repurposed beads from jewelry you no longer wear

    • secondhand craft supply stores (like here or here)

  • Findings (findings are the construction components of jewelry-making):

    • Beading wire

    • Crimp beads

    • Jump rings

    • Crimp covers (optional)

    • Wire guards (optional)

  • Tools:

    • Needle-nose pliers

    • Round-nose pliers

    • Wire cutters/scissors

Our Note: You may be surprised at how many kinds of craft supplies you can find at your local thrift store! Many larger thrift stores like Goodwill have an entire aisle dedicated to art supplies. Before starting a new craft, we recommend checking out your local thrift stores to get inspired and buy as many used supplies as possible. There are also online secondhand craft supply stores (like here or here), and online resellers like eBay and Etsy also sell vintage and secondhand craft materials. We also love thinking outside the box when sourcing craft supplies: check out the costume jewelry section of thrift stores to see if there are any beads, charms, or brooches you might want to take apart and repurpose in a new way, or consider sewing notions like ribbons and trim as alternate jewelry-making materials.
